In addition to the mirrored pocket door, my latest completed project is the linen cabinet.If you remember, the linen cabinet is back to back with one of the wardrobe cabinets in the guest bedroom closet.And it was the solution to me wanting a linen cabinet in the bathroom where I otherwise wouldn’t have gotten one.

I miscalculated the width of the opening and had to plane down one of the studs to get the linen cabinet to fit.

We replaced our old bathtub with a large shower and I then had my contractor tile and drywall out this area for a future linen cabinet.I shared more details and measurements about designing this built in linen cabinet back in this blog post.Those filler pieces make such a difference and really give it that built in linen cabinet feel!

Linen Closet Reveal

While the entire project isn’t quite done, I couldn’t resist revealing one aspect that is finished: the transformation of our built-in linen closet!Since the room is our guest room, I wanted to make the built-in more functional and aesthetically pleasing.

I also knew I wanted to incorporate black accents into the guest room since I’m using a lot of matte black fixtures in the adjoining bathroom.The closet is stocked with extra pillows, blankets, towels, washcloths, and a variety of toiletry items that our guests may need.

I’m so happy with how this piece turned out – I can hardly believe it is the same TV cabinet from just a couple months ago!

Built-In Linen Cabinets Update

A huge thank you to D. Lawless Hardware, for providing the beautiful pulls and handles for today’s home update!My husband and I gave the hallway between the kids’ two rooms a big refresh by painting the built-in linen cabinets!

Every time we walked past the old wood cabinets, as you’ll see below, we got a major itch to paint!

We have hardwood floors, so the wood on wood look just wasn’t doing it for us, especially with the original color of the wood.

This deep blue color with distressed copper pulls was just what this space needed!

Built-in Linen Closet

That space is destined to become a 32″-deep built-in linen closet, so today, I drew up a rough design.The top section has adjustable shelves, with three graduated drawers below and a counter that sticks out about 1-1/2″ between the two sections.The cabinet proper will be 34-1/2″ wide, with a 2″ face frame on either side; the face frame will be scribed to the walls.The face frame, drawer fronts and doors will be yellow pine (reclaimed, if I can find it for a reasonable price), shellacked, toned and varnished to match the rest of the unpainted woodwork in the house.And if I get lucky and can find some affordable Port Orford cedar, I’ll use that for the drawer bottoms.

Removing built in storage in old home?

I recently bought an old cape cod home that was built in 1939.It has a built in storage/linen closet in the hallway, that is the first thing you see when waking in the front door.

it has three very large drawers that are very difficult to open and close and the hallway is already tiny as it is so if I leave a drawer open the entire walk way is blocked.

This built in storage unit extends all the way back to the closet in one of the bedrooms behind it.I’m looking for ideas of how to better utilize this in ways of remodeling it or removing it completely to open up the hallway.

You’re probably like me and you ripped out the door frame and everything before you really knew what or how to transform a closet into open shelving.We were able to double the space that was here before by removing the door, door frame and ripping out part of the wall above.Finishing drywall was not my forte so hubs was in charge of all the drywall finishing.

How to Turn a Closet Into Built In Shelves

In this post, I’m sharing how to turn a closet into built in shelves!Step 3: Build Open Shelf Cubby Box My closet was about 24” deep from the back wall to the front edge of the outside drywall.I cut my plywood down to build the main cubby box where the shelves will go.

Notice that the face frame is flush to the inside of the shelf cubby box, and overhangs all sides..

I gave the shelves and the cubby a couple coats of clear poly, then installed the shelves using shelf pins and it was done!

I would like a linen closet in the design.I have 9' 1" of wall space and a 10 foot high ceiling to put my double sink vanity and a linen cabinet.I would like at least a 72 inch vanity and a linen closet on that wall.To do something like the picture below how wide of a space would I need for the linen closet to get this look?

With 36 inches left for the built-in cabinet could I get a 30 inch wide one?
