Steps for building custom built-in shelving units:Step 1: Size the partsTo get started on the built-ins, rip ¾-inch plywood into 16-inch-wide strips, and then cut them to length to create the sides, shelves, and cabinet dividers.Prep the ends of the shelves and top edge of each divider for assembly by drilling pocket holes.To fill the pocket holes, I used wood glue and plugs, which I then trimmed with a flush cut saw and sanded smooth.

For less noticeable pocket holes, I used wood filler.Step 8: Build the face framesCut the boards to size, and then drill pocket holes into the ends of all the horizontal pieces.

Day one of demo began with removing the brick facade off our old fireplace.For extra strength when hanging the TV, our contractor laid flat studs which would be used to mount the TV.Our contractor made our mantle from scratch, using about a sheet and a half of MDF, and trim!

Gorgeous Office Bookshelves with a Built In Electric Fireplace

Between the new office bookshelves and the built in fireplace, it was one of the easiest projects we have done in a long time….probably since our goat shed.And it will still be this for a while until we get my office built in our backyard.Once we had the office bookshelves built we finished up the fireplace built in by creating an opening where the fireplace would easily be inserted.

I am also so very glad I was able to use my new Wagner Flexio 4300 gravity feed paint sprayer for these office bookshelves and my built in electric fireplace.

The price my builder quoted me for the built ins was more than I'm willing to spend right now.I can build them myself far cheaper, and I like to DIY stuff anyway.

So my dilemma is, how much stone do I have him install at the time of build?I like the exposed returns, but if I have him put stones on the returns, will that make fitting the cabinets and shelving difficult?

My DIY Electric Fireplace and Built

Even though we inherited not one, but two chimneys, there’s no signs of an actual fireplace in our home.But my true intention for these cabinets were to build a wall of built-ins in our livingroom.I needed a mantel top/shelf to cover the depth of the mantel from wall to front, because my mantel is basically flat.The mantel piece was attached to the frame using 2″ finish nails.
