How to update 80's home foyer ledge?

Our new home is a colonial built in the 80's with a typical two-story foyer with a large window above the front door.The foyer window has a deep ledge/windowsill that looks bare as is but putting the traditional plants up on the ledge seems dated.What are some updated ways to decorate this awkward space?The ledge is about 8' wide and 18" deep.

Decorating a gigantic dust catcher

When we built our house, we had the option to include a "plant shelf" above the two foyer closets.I debated for a while, but decided to go for it and add a recessed light shining on the front door.

This works wonderfully at night so I don't have to keep the gigantic chandelier on.My problem is now how do I decorate it.For Christmas time, we are going to put an artificial tree that will be seen through the front window.
