Planters around supporting pergola posts. — BBC Gardeners' World

Hi there I am hoping I'll be able to get get some advice on what to do and how to do it correctly on here.I have built a pergola to the back of my house and now plan to plant vines and climbers from the planters that surround the supporting posts, my question is what do I cover the post with?A membrane and then plastic sheeting to avoid condensation and rot and for the planter base and sides some membrane only? What about water and will it dry quickly as there'll be a gap of about 40cm between soil/base and the concrete base?Could I cover the posts with some rough timber?Anyway I hope this clears things up for an answer as I don't want to put things in for the timber and base to rot and fall down! Thanks for reading.

The Easiest DIY Concrete Planter Ever

We discovered these great 16″x16″ patio pavers at our local home improvement store and got the keen idea to stand them on edge together to create a concrete planter. We demoed the old brick lamp posts, which was oh so very satisfying. We could stagger them and make the planter completely square, or create a rectangular box by placing one paver in between two side pavers.we removed the wooden boards and checked to make sure the box was level once it was on the ground.

Pergola Posts

Pergola Post InstallationMounted on Concrete Footer or Existing SlabThe easiest method of installation is to dig footings to the correct depth (below the frost line in your area) and use post mounting hardware to attach the posts to the concrete footings or existing concrete slab as follows: Order the 8 foot or 10 foot post option and add the post attachment hardware to your order. If you made any other selection and you’d like to purchase mounting hardware, simply add that selection to your cart from the Accessories section. If you will be installing your pergola on a concrete patio or concrete footings choose Concrete Anchor.

Also the use of concrete form tubes helps this because the smooth surface of the tube will not allow the ground to grab the concrete and pull it up.

We also recommend if you are putting the pergola posts in ground, that you wrap the bottom part of the post that will be in contact with cement in a peel and stick roofing membrane.

Much Ado About Mulch

Gardeners are routinely advised to apply a 2 to 3-inch layer of wood chips or bark mulch around new plantings, and to mulch regularly thereafter.Typical planting with bark mulch around widely-spaced plantsThere is plenty of expert advice available about types of mulch and how to use them.

Much Ado About Mulch
Color-treated mulch does not benefit plants, soil, or wildlifeIncorrect mulching actually damages trees and shrubsUntil recently, however, there has been little discussion about whether it is necessary, or wise, to mulch at all.

The one thing we know for sure, is that it did not evolve in a habitat with a 2 to 3-inch layer of man-made wood mulch.

Open soil in new plantings may be covered with leaf mulch, chopped leaves, or even whole leaves until new plants fill inIn the absence of man-made mulch, nature may offer some wonderful surprises.
