We bought some beautiful Pella wood doors from Lowe’s, and we were so excited when they were delivered to our home!Today, we are going to share with you the steps we took to install and stain our new wood front doors.Prehung doors consists of a complete unit with doors already hung with hinges to the jamb frame.Step 2 – Order DoorsWe took our door measurements to Lowe’s, and ordered beautiful wood doors from Pella.Prepare the wood for stain by applying Minwax wood conditioner with a stain pad.

Trying to figure out what color to stain our exterior doors fell into the second category for us.Henry and I both agree that exterior door color plays such an important role in creating great curb appeal!Choosing the right color for the exterior doors of your home starts with deciding whether you will go with stain or paint.Henry and I knew from the beginning of this build we were going with a real wood door from Simpson Door Company, so this wasn’t a huge issue for us.

Or should I match the door to the floors?

How I Re

After years of sun and water damage (see below), my front door was in need of a re-stain and re-varnish.I personally decided NOT to remove the door from its hinges because that seemed unnecessary and a huge pain.I recommend removing all other hardware from the door including the door know, the peephole viewer, and the bottom door sweep.When I was done sanding, I vacuumed the door to remove the sawdust, then used mineral spirits and a rag to clean it.

So, I did a minor touch up by re-sanding the door, applying the stain where needed, then applying new coats of varnish.

DIY Front Door Makeover with Gel Stain

Today, I am going to show you how to make a painted exterior door look like a stained wood door (for under $50!!!!).Luckily, I didn’t have to resort to plan b , and I am super thrilled with the outcome of the gel stain.

I went with Minwax’s Gel Stain in the color Walnut (you can find it here).

When applying the first coat of gel stain, I addressed the flat surfaces first, and then worked on the detailed grooves.

Tip: Not sure if it was the humidity or the nature of the gel stain itself, but it took almost an entire day for the first coat of stain to dry.
