The rest of the elements are below so you can get a sense for what’s happening up front:We’ve got white, gray, black, gold and green in the plants.We have a ton of plants (thanks to Kate at Monrovia, I love you deeply) but is green, white, black, gray and gold enough?At home in Los Angeles, I have a bright red door and it brings me daily happiness.Of course, a red door brings an instant jolt of happiness to the curb appeal (I can attest from my own house).The idea is that the same color would go on the double entry doors as on the mudroom Dutch door.

And now our glorious, wood front door just makes it all better!The dark-stained wood against the white is even better than I thought it would be.

I loved this color scheme on the inside of our house: dark wood beams with all white walls.The door is stained the same color as the interior beams: Minwax Dark Walnut.Since we used so much dark wood in the house and already have so much white, I really liked the idea of staining both sides of the door.

Sometimes good things come in small packages, and that’s particularly true of this petite North Loop bungalow.The charming two-bedroom house has been practically updated but still shows its age in the best of ways, namely in its original hickory hardwood floors, moldings, and glass doorknobs.The second, the larger of the two, is currently used as a more traditional living room.

In 2013, when I started focusing on exterior design intensely, we saw a lot of gray houses with white trim.White houses with white trim and white houses with black shutters and doors.

The dark house trend is also making its way into Atlanta, so in the not-so-distant future, you may see a black house with lime green shutters.Lawyers like white trim, black shutters, and red or black doors.

You’ll see black and white homes, for sure.

Average House Size Falls in Second Quarter

Not by much, but the typical size of a new single-family house fell in the second quarter.According to the National Association of Home Builder’ analysis of Census Bureau data, the slight 63-square-foot decline in the second quarter resulted largely from “incremental” moves by builders to more entry-level housing.

The average, or mean, floor area in this year’s second quarter dipped to 2,555 square feet, down from 2,618 in the second quarter of 2017.

The falloff in the median size house fell even less, from 2,355 to 2,344 during the same period.

Now, though, “the recent declines in size indicate that this part of the cycle has ended, and size will trend lower as builders add more entry-level homes into inventory.”
