I used Douglas Fir and applied a couple of coats of a stain I made from soaking 2 steel wool pads in equal parts of vinegar and water (2 cups of each). I let the mix sit for a couple of days before I used it. I topped it off with 2 coats of Natural Watco Oil. This was my first big project and I think that it was super easy to do.
