how to decorate staircase landing which overlooks great room

This walkway has nice railings with banister that overlooks the living room. I was wondering what if any decor/accessories I could use so as to add interest to the railingwhen/if the guests' eyes travel upto the second floor.One thing I thought of was plants/greenery. This image is off of the internet but the layout is exactly same.Need ideas how to spruce up/decorate the area near the railing that can be seen from lower level.
